In a world where many brands are building “planned obsolescence” into their products such that after some period of time customers are forced to buy new versions of their products to replace the old, Bryston takes the opposite approach. Instead of forcing you into NEW models, the company wants to help keep past purchasers of Bryston gear in wedded bliss with their OLD “vintage” gear via a new Back to the Future product restoration service.

Bryston, the high-end electronics and loudspeaker manufacturer with an enviable reputation for building bullet-proof gear, announced on Tuesday a program that perhaps only a Bryston can offer – their Back to the Future vintage product restoration program. This program is designed to offer Bryston customers who have products they may have owned for a very long time, an opportunity to have their gear tested and restored to like-new performance and looks.
Only a company confident in the quality of their gear would even think of offering such a program. In many cases, gear that is years old, or decades old, would generally be unrecoverable – at least at any reasonable price. However, in the case of Bryston, the gear is known to be a reliable, day-in and day-out, rock-steady performer. Bryston amps have found their way into many professional recording studios – some operating round the clock during peak times – for exactly this reason.
Program Speaks to Brand’s Performance & Durability
Because we have such a large number of beautifully designed and manufactured amplifiers out there that have been in use for as many as four-plus decades, we felt that offering these restoration service options to our customers was important. We have built our brand based largely upon a reputation for audio products that deliver outstanding performance and durability—this program certainly reinforces Bryston’s commitment to quality and service.
James Tanner, Bryston CEO
The company’s Back to the Future Program offers three levels or tiers of restoration services. Each tier can be purchased independently or in combination with other tiers, depending on the individual circumstances of the product being restored.
Back to the Future Restoration Tiers & Pricing
- TIER 1, ELECTRICAL – This tier offers a full check of all electrical and mechanical functions and includes the replacement of any underperforming part. Tier 1 price: US$1,000.
- TIER 2, COSMETIC – This tier offers a cosmetic upgrade including faceplate, top, and handles. The restoration of the outward appearance includes a refinishing of the current hardware on the vintage amplifier. Note that this tier does NOT include chassis, back-panel, or heatsinks. Bryston technicians will do their best to repair dents, imperfections, bends, etc. Tier 2 price: US$600.
- TIER 3, OUTPUT DEVICES – This tier replaces a vintage amplifier’s output power transistors with the most recent applicable power devices. Tier 3 price: US$400.00.

Genius marketing on their part. There are a few other manufacturers out there that could and should follow suit.

I would think that for $1000, replacement of power supply caps should be included even if the originals are working fine. Otherwise $1000 plus the cost of new new caps (installed) could go towards buying a new and even better sounding amp. That would be my thinking..
