New data released by the Commerce Department showed an unexpectedly large drop in retail sales for the month of December. In fact, U.S. retail sales had their largest across-the-board drop in the past eleven months – plunging economists into vigorous debate over just what this means for the economy.

Sennheiser Launches Its Own Retail Stores, At Least Temporarily
The Sennheiser Group, a well-known manufacturer of headphones, microphones and wireless transmission systems, launched two “pop-up” stores – one in New York and another in San Francisco – this past weekend. Their purpose? To showcase Sennheiser products and to highlight its “efforts to increase consumer awareness on the benefits of premium sound.”

In First Step of Transformation, Thiel Terminates Reps
In a notice emailed to dealers last Thursday sporting a spiffy new corporate logo, Thiel took what appears to be the first step in what is promised to be a stream of “regular communications from us” regarding the company’s transformation from a legendary audiophile loudspeaker brand to a…well to what, we just don’t know yet. But what we do know is that the company has begun this transformation by terminating its entire national independent sales representative sales force.

Amazon’s Mysterious Lab126 – Poised to Take Over Home Automation?
Online retail behemoth Amazon.com, Inc. has always been pretty secretive about their internal projects and initiatives. Especially so about their Lab126 hardware design division, the group responsible for the popular Kindle e-book reader…and the not-so-popular Fire phone. ProSource Scores Deal with Leon Speakers
ProSource, a division of BrandSource and the self-proclaimed largest buying group of AV integrators, announced this week that it has added Ann Arbor, Michigan-based Leon Speakers to its vendor roster. Proclaiming the addition “an honor,” group co-President Jim Ristow says Leon brings “incredible design and top-notch audio quality” to the group.

CEDIA on Latest Market Data, ‘Installers are Having a Good Year’
The Custom Electronic Design and Installation Association (CEDIA) released new preliminary market data at their Expo held earlier this month – in a decidedly more optimistic presentation than in past years. Erica Shonkwiler, CEDIA’s Market Research Manager, was obviously pleased with the data she was to share with the media – and she conveyed an optimism that appears to be due to the new data showing an upturn in CEDIA members’ business results.

Azione Unlimited Collides with Kaleidescape
Azione Unlimited, the retail buying group, announced this week that they have added Kaleidescape to their roster of vendors supporting the organization. According to their vendor listing on the groups website, this now brings their roster to 40 vendors with direct relationships, as well as more available through distributor partnerships.

Happy Birthday Azione – Retail Buying Group Reaches Key Milestone
Azione Unlimited, a buying group consisting largely of custom integrators and retailers announced this week that it had reached the ripe old age of 2-years-old. The now toddling group was launched by Richard Glikes shortly after he left his stint at yet another retail buying group, HTSA. When Azione was launched, some questioned its viability, but this announcement goes a long way towards putting those questions to rest.
