Trident IoT, a relatively new company founded by a group of industry veterans with extensive experience behind them (“over a century of industry knowledge” according to the company), announced this week that it is launching a new series of chips that it says will decrease the time-to-market for connected device manufacturers. This new series of chips is the Taurus Z-Wave Series.
But just what is the Taurus chip all about?
Learn more about the Trident Taurus Z-Wave Series Chips
Trident has zeroed in on Z-Wave solutions for the connected device market and offers new optimized silicon solutions that it believes will help empower that market to grow and thrive. This new Taurus chip is an example of that philosophy.
Chips that Support the Latest Advancements in Z-Wave Technology
The company says that the Taurus chip will utilize SoC (System-on-Chip) solutions and modules “that support the latest advancements in Z-Wave technology.” These advancements include Z-Wave Long Range (ZWLR) in the U.S. and ZWLR implementation to the European spec.
The Taurus Series gives global manufacturers access to cutting-edge Z-Wave capabilities. This silicon series and SDK will be the first to implement the ZWLR European specification, accelerating IoT product development worldwide.

So ‘What’s So Special?’ I’m Glad You Asked
What’s particularly special about Taurus, you ask. The company says that the Taurus Series utilizes an “ultra-low power” high-performance Z-Wave SoC. With this being the case, the Taurus is said to enable Z-Wave solutions that feature class-leading battery life, range, and memory.
These new chips incorporate an ARM Cortex M-33 microprocessor, 1MB of flash program memory, and 288KB of SRAM data memory for serious processing power and response time. Their sub-GHz radios transmit at +20dBm and +14dBm allowing them to communicate at distances of up to 1+ miles.
Also Supports ZWLR
Taurus supports Z-Wave Plus, Z-Wave Plus v2, and ZWLR, which, the company says, enables “the development of highly secure, reliable, scalable, and backward compatible solutions for smart home, hospitality, multi-dwelling units, and more.” Thanks to its utilization of the ZWLR 12-bit addressing space, the Taurus Series supports up to 4,000 nodes.
The Taurus chips also leverage the ZWLR dynamic power control which provides for end-point battery life of up to ten years from a single coin-cell battery.
ZWLR is a revolutionary technology, with the power to expand the reach, scale and utility of IoT applications while preserving full backward compatibility with currently deployed Z-Wave devices. This new Z-Wave silicon offering, paired with the Trident IoT SDK and design services, will enable more Z-Wave Alliance members to take advantage of ZWLR capabilities, bringing exciting new products to market faster around the globe.

End-to-End Engineering Help
In order to help manufacturers interested in the Taurus line to truly experience a compressed time-to-market for their products, Trident offers end-to-end engineering consultation on those products. The company can offer insights and knowledge from some of the industry’s leading experts on wireless connectivity, including, obviously, Z-Wave technology.
Trident says its Taurus Series chips will begin shipping at scale in Q4 2024. However, the company is ready to provide Taurus Series samples for select partners, to allow them to begin immediate testing and product development.
