This week we learned that Colquhoun Audio Laboratories Limited (CALL), the folks who also own Axiom Audio and Bryston, Ltd, have made a new acquisition, this time buying Magnum Dynalab, a highly regarded manufacturer of high-performance tuners and vacuum tube audio products. The company says the transaction was closed on March 31, 2023. The terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Colquhoun (pronounced coal kwin) says that it plans to fully integrate all of the manufacturing, sales, and service operations of Magnum into its growing compound in Dwight, Ontario, Canada. This compound is also home to its Axiom Audio and Bryston brands as well – in what is an impressive expansion of Colquhoun’s high-end audio brand portfolio.
This acquisition offers an opportunity for CALL to spread its wings into new adjacent product categories to its existing brands with products that remain important, necessary, and popular with the high-end, high-performance audio crowd. I would say that CALL has done an impressive job of carefully aligning brand values and historically positive reputations of these disparate companies to create an even more powerful whole.
High-Performance FM Tuners that Coaxed the Finest Performance Out of the Ether
We are excited to add Magnum Dynalab’s legendary FM tuners and vacuum tube electronics to our product mix, all supported under one roof by our design, engineering, and manufacturing capabilities as well as our award-winning customer service.
Ian Colquhoun, Founder and CEO of Colquhoun Audio Laboratories Limited
Magnum Dynalab was founded in 1984 to create high-performance FM tuners, a seemingly simple item for which it is far harder to coax the highest levels of technical performance – essentially out of the ether – than you might imagine. But Magnum quickly began to earn an enviable reputation with products many called revolutionary and refined (do those two terms go together?)
Boosting Tuner Performance by Boosting Antenna Performance
In fact, Magnum’s very first tuner, the FT 101 was said to earn “glowing reviews” according to the company. The company quickly came to realize that one way to boost the performance of their high-end tuners was to boost the performance of the antenna attached to it – and so Magnum Dynalab expanded into both the directional and omnidirectional FM antenna business. These antennas were equally well-received in the industry.
Over time, the company came to create no fewer than 15 high-performance analog tuners, including the unique Triode Series that incorporated vacuum tube technology in the audio output stage. Ever the innovator, Magnum Dynalab has recently created its Dynamyte series which features an advanced HD Music Streamer.
Magnum Dynalab Employees on Hand for Transition to Colquhoun’s Facility
Magnum Dynalab was owned by Jim Richards who acquired the company in 2014. Richards served as the company’s President and COO from then until this acquisition by Colquhoun Audio Labs.
With this acquisition begins the tough work of transitioning Magnum Dynalab to Colquhoun Audio Labs’ facility in Dwight. The company says that Magnum employees will be onsite to facilitate the move.
