Planar Systems, Inc. announced today that it will show a new transparent OLED technology this month at Integrated Systems Europe (ISE) 2015 this month. Calling themselves “a pioneer in this next wave of transparent display” Planar will show what looks to be an impressive 55″ prototype display with stunning OLED image on a transparent screen.

Planar says there is a broad range of applications for transparent displays and already has a line called the Planar LookThru series based on existing LCD technology. However, this new innovation appears to take this capability a step further.
The company is demonstrating the many positive attributes of OLED for just this type of product. OLED – Organic Light Emitting Diodes – are self-emitting diodes that eliminate the need for a backlighting panel or enclosure. This fact alone “overcomes a major hurdle to transparent display adoption” the company says.
OLED is perfect for this use…
OLED technology also creates high contrast images, with a broad color spectrum, and wide viewing angles…all of which are perfect for a transparent display application. And in OLED, only those pixels generating an image are on, while the rest of the pixels are off, again a perfect attribute for use in transparent display situation.
“The vision of transparent displays, popularized for decades in science fiction movies and television shows, is now nearing reality,” said Jennifer Davis, vice president of marketing at Planar Systems in a prepared statement. “This technology is poised to revolutionize space design, customer engagement, and the digital display of information and branding for decades to come, and we are proud to be a pioneer in this next wave of transparent display development.”
How does it look?…
What does a transparent display look like? Well, imagine a flat piece of glass that you can see through as it is perfectly clear, with an electronically generated image showing on the glass itself. This allows you, for example, to have a product clearly seen through the display, with logos, images and explanatory graphics showing on the glass panel itself.
Planar says this is the perfect solution for retail, museum, and corporate settings. As in our example above, retailers can create almost a Google Glass type augmented reality demonstration with the product clearly seen along with text and graphics highlighting certain features.
Multiple uses…
Museums, Planar says, could use transparent displays to create interactive experiences with users operating the display to learn different things about an artifact shown behind (through) the display. Corporations could use transparent displays in their lobbies, cafeterias, and conference rooms “as a dynamic way to present information to employees and customers,” Planar says.
The company says it expects to be able to offer OLED transparent display products in 2016. The company fully expects that it will lead the charge in paving the way to greater market adoption of transparent displays.
